Curcas Oil N.V., based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, has been established as a response to the ever-increasing demand for alternatives to fossil fuels. Curcas Oil N.V. is one of the leading producers for crude Jatropha oil. Curcas Oil N.V., through its subsidiaries Alternative Energy Manufacturing Ltd. (Thailand) and PT Pengembangan Jarak Indonesia, cultivates Jatropha plants for the production of crude Jatropha oil in a sustainable manner.
The name "Curcas" has been derived from the original name of Jatropha seedlings. Following the oil extraction of the Jatropha seeds, the crude Jatropha oil is used for the production of biofuel. An advantage of crude Jatropha oil is the fact that it is a non-food oil and therefore a lucrative alternative for common fossil fuel. Also, the cultivation of Jatropha plants and the subsequent production of crude Jatropha Oil, do not interfere with land for food and causes no competition.
The by-product, the Jatropha press cake, is also valuable as rich organic fertilizer or as fuel for co-firing in a combined heat and power plant.
